The Rowing Club is appropriate for anyone at Cooper Union, regardless of rowing experience (although some physical dexterity is required). For those who have experience, it will allow them to become acquainted with a different type of boat than they are probably accustomed to. We launch from Manhattan's Pier 40 in 28-foot traditional wooden Whitehall gigs. During the off-season, members are welcome to come down to the boathouse to help build a new boat.
By introducing the Cooper community to rowing, we are expanding the sport of fixed-seat open water rowing. By joining the club and attending rows regularly, Cooper students will learn good rowing technique, teamwork and coordination, basic seamanship and some history about the boats and the New York Harbor. We seek to promote awareness of public waterways and allow people to enjoy them up close.
