Primarily, this club will provide students with the resource to learn and practice traditional Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu. Pulling from the words of Body Balance Academy, "Martial arts, when taught properly, instills the virtues of Wisdom, Humility, Honesty, and Integrity". The focus ranged from long term commitment and training, to 1 day intensive self defense seminars. The KB club desires to pass on self defense skills as well as build an active community that meets weekly. The club would also like these workshops to push past the walls of the cooper union. Hosting larger scale, free seminars to the New York City community. Larissa Gilbert has hosted and lead a number of activist self defense trainings including Chop Tuition Bootcamp, Women and Trans Self Defense Class for WORD (Women Organized to Resist and Defend) etc. She will (at the beginning) facilitate the self defense portion of the KB club. The club will also include other forms of exercise including yoga, dance, cardio intensives. But all blanketing under martial arts.
The club will contribute to the Cooper Union by building a community that encourages physical exercise, offers free kung fu and self defense skills as well as other cardio seminars. As the club grows, practices, and acquires basic skills. The cooper union KB club could become a tight Cooper community that also provides a free resource for people outside of the Cooper Union including trans, queer, women, people of color, or other groups specifically targeted by oppression. So often we find ourselves being harassed and threatened with violence on the streets because of our gender or race. These classes will aim to cover the basics of how to defend oneself in the event of an attack in order to empower our communities to fight back on a personal level.
